Traveling Plans

For those of you who were wanting to know, we think our travel plans are almost settled upon. Tuesday we will fly to the big city to apply for our Thai visas.  We will hopefully pick-up the visas on Thursday or Friday.  On Saturday morning we will fly to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  We will stay one night there, and in the morning we will fly to Chiang Mai, Thailand.  We will give birth there.  Chiang Mai does not offer as much as Bangkok, but we know a lot of people who live there so that is a plus.

Obviously we are not going directly to Thailand.  All flights to Thailand from where we live go through Bangkok, which is not an option at this point.  Neither of us have been to Kuala Lumpur before, so although I doubt we will venture far from our hotel, it will be exciting to catch a glimpse of the city.

We miss you all, and thank you for thinking of us as we have been dealing with our traveling issues.

Pregnancy and Traveling

We have received some e-mails from concerned friends that knew about our travel plans.  This coming Sunday we were supposed to fly to a big city to apply for a 60 day visa to Thailand, then on Thursday we were supposed to fly to Thailand.  If you have been keeping up with the international news then you know that protesters have swarmed the 2 airports in Bangkok, forcing officials to close the airports.

Here is what we know so far.  The American Embassy in Bangkok has advised against trying to enter Thailand until at least December 1st, but it is likely they will issue another warning like this, everyday until the protesters leave the airport or allow planes to begin landing.

Therefore we have to change our plans.  I cannot fly after December 11th, and although it is 13 days from now, we have to apply for and get our visas and obtain international airline tickets in only 13 days.  We have been told if things do not get cleared up in the next few days, then we will have to give birth in Hong Kong.  This is not good news for many many reasons, nevertheless Hong Kong is the most Western place in this part of the world, and we would be very comfortable there.

If you all could please be thinking about us in this regard.  We would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving! We celebrated the holiday with one other American. This was our Thanksgiving meal, complete with green bean casserole dressing, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, and the always delicious baked chicken. For dessert we ate pumpkin pie. We forgot to take pictures of ourselves. LB did a good job preparing everything. She can really cook some good food. I am so THANKful to be married to her.

We started eating at 1:30. At 3:00 we watched a movie. At 4:00 a national friend came over so we turned off the movie. At 5:00 the apartment people came to look at a water leak. At 6:00 our national friend left. At 6:30 we finished the movie. At 7:00 our American friend left. At 9:00 LB was asleep.
It was a good day.

Field trip

Last Wednesday the university took all the foreign students and foreign teachers on a field trip. KB went but LB didn’t go. We drove about 1.5 hours out into the middle of nowhere to visit the students at another university. At the school we were told to entertain the students for about 20 minutes. For many of them it was their first time to see a foreigner. My friend said it was like going to the zoo, only they were bringing the animals to the people.

Field trip

Then we drove another 30 or 45 minutes to see a natural cave. Before we went into the cave they took us to eat lunch at the restaurant just outside. I ate fried scorpions and fried silk worms. The scorpions tasted like french fries and the worms were salty. During the meal I had to take some Pepto.

Field trip

I drank green tea, but some of the other drinking options were:

Seahorse tea.

Scorpion and red bean tea

Starfish tea

Ant tea

Flying dragon tea

Field trip

Then we walked through the cave. It was about 2 miles long. They lined the walking path with neon lights.

Field trip

Inside the cave we saw natural stalactite formations.

Field trip

This rock was named “Pair of birds relying on each other.”

This rock was named “Male lion looking at the mountain.”

Field trip

These signs were inside the cave.

Field trip

Then I got to ride a derby cart down the “mountain.” The ground was covered with Astroturf.

From around town...

I took a picture of this movie poster with my camera phone so the quality is not very good. I am not sure who the man and woman are at the top of the poster, but on the bottom left is Aragorn riding a horse with the other Lord of the Rings characters and on the bottom right is the Japanese guy from The Last Samurai riding a horse and the other Last Samurai characters. I had no idea Aragorn and the Samurai made a movie together.

McDonald's

Today we ran several errands in preparation for our upcoming adventure. After about two hours of taking care of business we decided to run across the street to McDonald’s for a quick breather. While I was paying for some hot chocolate, a visitor entered the building. This was possibly the tinniest McDonald’s patron I’ve ever seen.

Around town...

Business must have been slow that day at the restaurant so they sent the cooks out to do some renovations with sledgehammers. They removed a wall and installed some new doors. We were sitting in another restaurant and watched through the window as this all occurred.

LB studying...

LB getting in a little mid-afternoon studying. She used to attend the university with me but since the baby is getting bigger and her comfort is getting smaller we decided for her to stay home and study with a tutor. Her foreign language reading ability is improving very quickly now. She can definitely read more than me.

Pictures from around town...

We wanted to get some plants for the apartment so we rode a bus to the outskirts of town to the plant market. The plant market was just like the plant section at Home Depot or Lowe's but only massively bigger. Its was like Lowe's on steroids. The large selection of plants were well manicured and well watered. But outside the plant market are all of these make-shift tents where the plant market workers live without water, electricity, restroom. etc. The red tent is made from an old billboard sign. To the left of the white tent is a rock with a piece of wood that serves as a table. I have no idea how they stay warm when it is below freezing outside.

Date night at Pizza Hut

Sunday evening we went on a date to Pizza Hut. We got there at about 5:15, which is before the locals usually arrive to eat dinner. Our teachers think we are crazy because we like to eat dinner at 5:30- they say its too early.
When KB took this picture he didn't want to get out of the booth because other people had arrived and he would have made a spectacle of himself. Well, being white already makes him a spectacle, but he didn't want the flash to get more people's attention. Our objective on this evening was good food with a little anonymity.
Obviously this wasn't taken at Pizza Hut, but it was taken after we returned from PH.

Tree.

Getting the tree done branch by branch.

KB made me get off the chair I was standing on for this picture.  He said he did not want to get hate e-mails from my friends and family for letting me stand on a chair while 7 months pregnant.  I told him that my friends and family know well enough that I am a bit stubborn and if I see the need to stand on a chair to do something, then I will stand on the chair.  However before I start getting hate e-mails about being 7 months pregnant and standing on a chair - I just want you to know, I was very careful...and KB did not know I was standing on the chair until he walked in to take the picture.

Tree

LB drawing the branches for the tree we are making for Clai-av-eline's room. After she draws it on the paper we'll transfer it to foam and cut it out and stick it to the wall.
Putting up the tree trunk.

Courtyard pictures

The entrance gate to our apartment complex.

One of the courtyards in our complex. I couldn't decide which picture I liked best.

KB holding LB's purse and handbag.

Since there are not any basketball goals near our apartment, kids will dribble the ball in this area and shoot it between the wooden arcs.

More coffee shop photos...

I know this picture looks like the one above it but this one shows her prego body a little better. I must say that I have a good looking wife.
